History of the Palais Rohan - Actually City Hall at bordeaux

This is the history of the Palais Rohan - Actually City Hall from bordeaux

mairie bordeaux The Palais Rohan was built from 1772 to 1784, as the residence of the Archbishop in place of an older building that had the same function. The engineer Joseph Etienne newly arrived from Paris planned a grand assembly comprising a main building on three levels at the rear of a large courtyard. On the streets the courtyard is enclosed by three low-wing single-level. This set is made of a Louis XVI monumental. The dining room was decorated in 1783-84 by painters and Berinzago Lacour. The archbishop who launched the project, Ferdinand Maximilian de Rohan Mériadec, died before the completion of this palace and it was its successor who settled there.

At the rear is still a large garden. On each side of it are two wings which were built in 1880 to house the Museum of Beaux Arts.

The Palais Rohan in 1837 became the city hall of Bordeaux.
