Sainte Croix District History |
Following the docks, district Sainte Croix is one of the most ancient of Bordeaux, it shelters the abbey church Saint-cross which was the seat of the parish from 1130. If the choir of the church was reserved for the religious Benedictines, the transept and the collateral belonged to the believers of the parish. The major altar was dedicated to the Virgo, the object of a pilgrimage to Notre-Dame-des-Marins; ex--votos illustrated scenes of rescue of vessels in perdition.
In the past the "rue des Bouviers" was places of the persons which maintained the beefs as which harnesses served for pulling the goods of vessels. The shoemakers worked leathers of Bazadais. The potters practiced in the "rue des Fours"....
Today it is the district of the "Beaux arts" and the national Theater from Bordeaux to Aquitaine. In the neighbouring streets you can only be seduced by the numerous creators who settle down there.
