In 1756, year during which a fire destroys the theatre which rises on the ditches of the City hall (today "cours Victor-Hugo"), the city of Bordeaux possesses no more theater.
Three men are going to conjugate their efforts, in spite of all the difficulties, to give to the capital of Guyenne a monument which deserves her: the Marshal de Richelieu, the governor of the province; Dupré de Saint-Maur, bursar of the majority; Victor Louis, architect.
Facade of the Big Theater And so the Big Theater, the plans of which are drawn and the works begun in 1773, is inaugurated on April 7th, 1780, by Athalie de Racine's representation, preceded by a "nimbleness" of Blincourt: Apollon's Judgment, in front of a crammed room where anticipates 1 700 spectators.
The price of the construction exceeded the figure fixed by Louis of 2 436 629 pounds.
